| Across Southern California, The Art World Turns Back The Hands of Time |
|
Pacific Standard Time celebrates Southern California art influence.
Finally, we're recognizing the real contribution these artists have made since World War II. It's been understated in the world art community for years. Much of the focus has been on the contributions from Paris and New York, yet these artists were the innovators whose global influence is still being felt today. Southern California by its nature, because it was evolving as a destination, was very innovative after World War II. California in general i where much of the innovation has happened over the years. It provided a much freer climate in which to experiment. Now, the region is finally being recognized as a true art movement that continues to influence today's artists in all genres from architecture to furniture design to visual and performing arts.
A long-time Getty project Thanks to the support of Getty Research Institute, Pacific Standard Time features more than 60 cultural organizations across Southern California who are contributing to this visual and oral history at venues across the region. Many San Diego venues are participating as well. These "Must See" exhibits feature works that helped Southern California's art scene come into its own. These exhibits run October 2011 through March 2012. This is an all-encompassing exploration of all major art movements from 1945 to 1980, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to understand an era that continues to inspire today's artists. From photographs, to movies and original artwork, the exhibits are numerous and awe inspiring. Visit http://www.pacificstandardtime.org/galleries for a list of participating venues in the LA area. |
