San Diego is Alive with Art and Entertainment
oskar-fischinger-image1Experiments in Abstraction: Art in Southern California, 1945 to 1980, addresses a generation of California-based artists who explored the possibilities of abstraction. In the years following World War II, a distinctive style of art, identified as Hard-Edge painting, was developed by pioneering artists such as Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, Oskar Fischinger, Helen Lundeberg, and John McLaughlin.

This show at the San Diego Museum of Art is among the "must see" exhibits for those interested in educating themselves about art. The images, created by thickly layering on vibrant colors is reminiscent of the work of Chinese artist Jian Wang, who tempers realism with 20th century abstraction. You can see many of Wang's works here at Art Expressions Gallery. Or browse them on our website.

You can enjoy a selection of 80 paintings dated between 1907 and 1956, including those from María Izquierdo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo. (link:http://j.mp/MexArtNews )

As our thoughts turn to the New Year, San Diego is once again the
center of all things art. Five new exhibits launch in 2012, which I highly recommend adding to your art experience:
  • Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at San Diego Natural History Museum
  • TEN THOUSAND WAVES at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego
  • Dyeing Elegance at San Diego Museum of Art
  • Unusual Suspects: Painted Photographs by Holly Roberts at Museum of Photographic Arts
  • THE POINT OF VIEW: William Glen Crooks at Oceanside Museum of Art
